John married Sarah on 20th November 1915 at Bangor Register Office, Wales.  At the time, John was a Private in the 16th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, stationed at Kinnel Down Camp, Winchester.  Sarah's residence at the time is listed as 7 Tabernacle Street, Bangor.  Her father's name was Griffith Hughes, who was a Dock Labourer.Details on their marriage certificate are interesting. The registrar has stated that they were both 21 years old; yet someone in the family has changed John's age to 17 years, 6 months. The age of 21 does not add up for either of them according to Census records, giving their approximate birth years. It looks as though they could both have been 17, yet stating their ages as 21.

Witnesses at the wedding were Hugh Owen and Trephosa Hughes (Sarah's sister).

After leaving the Fusiliers, John worked as a barber.  During his working life, he suffered a serious injury to one of his fingers, having to have part of his finger amputated.

Sarah used to work in the County Theatre.
